NCHS Ag Pathway

AGRISCIENCE

This course introduces students to the various segments of the agriculture industry. Agricultural career opportunities will be emphasized. Basic animal science, plant and land science, and agricultural mechanics skills may be included. The selection and planning of a supervised agricultural experience program and related record keeping will be presented. Personal development and speaking skills will be heavily emphasized. Leadership development will be provided through the FFA. Students will receive personal guidance and counseling with preparatory instructional program selection. Each student will be expected to have a supervised agricultural experience program (SAE). 

*Agriscience is the introductory required course for Ag pathways

FOOD SCIENCE

In this course students will complete hands-on activities, projects, and problems that simulate actual concepts and situations found in the food science and safety industry, allowing students to build content knowledge and technical skills. Students will investigate areas of food science including food safety, food chemistry, food processing, food product development, and marketing/distribution.  In addition, students will explore connections between the Food Science and Safety lessons, Supervised Agricultural Experience, and FFA components that are important for the development of an informed agricultural education student. Students will investigate, experiment, and learn about documenting a project, solving problems, and communicating solutions to their peers and members of the professional community.

FOOD PROCESSING 

Creating a new food product to sell to the public can take a food company months, or even years, to complete! This class will focus on the entire process involved in the movement of food from the farm to the grocery store. Students will work to create a unique product in class that they can produce and market within the school. As the class creates its product, many integral topics to food processing will be covered including methods of food preservation, monitoring the production process for safety, and creating an effective package. This course will also afford students the opportunity to have hands-on catering experiences and community service opportunities.

AG EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS IN AG LEADERSHIP

Agriculture Employability Skills provides opportunities to develop skills in: job searching, preparing resumes, writing letters of application, job interview, attitude, communicating effectively, human relations and accepting responsibilities. Leadership development will be provided through the National FFA Organization. Each student will be expected to have a supervised agricultural experience program.
